Anyone can learn2paint

Anyone who can hold a pencil can learn to draw, and it has been proved many times that even when the hands are disabled, a determined artist can find other ways to draw such as placing the pencil between the toes or teeth, for those of us fortunate enough to have our hands, it is good to remember these facts and helps us to persevere.

Drawing is something we need to learn similar to any other profession, it does not just come naturally, as many people believe, artists work on some drawings for hours, using techniques that are learnt and remembered, the desire to achieve, is what varies.  Sometimes a drawing is more interesting than other times and appeals to the individual in different ways, for instance women seem particularly fond of drawing and panting flowers with one of my painting groups consisting of females only, I noticed different problems arising with all subject matter, except for the session on flowers, the students confidence on the whole was higher, even with the suggestion of flowers, and each student undertook the task with enthusiasm and joy.  So some subjects will appeal more to you than others, but all drawing will benefit your knowledge.

Small regular sketches will increase your confidence, and a sketch book and pencil carried with you at all times will encourage this.  Try and develop your observation skills, really look at things, notice the formation of clouds, look at the colours of flowers, see the movements and actions of crowds of people, you will notice for instance that people drawn from the back, are easier to draw, and overlapping shapes creates a better composition, and makes drawing easier.

Drawing is therapeutic, you can lose yourself within the work, your worries will take second place and give your mind a well earned rest, even pain will lessen as you become absorbed, so drawing can be likened to a meditation or therapy session, and even when the results do not please you, you will have learnt valuable techniques.

A blank sheet of paper is perfect, students sometimes worry about spoiling this, with their attempts at drawing, feeling that their efforts will not be good enough, the quickest and easiest way to overcome this is to hang some blank sheets of paper on your wall, I promise you will soon take them down, forget perfection and create, not one of your visitors or friends, would be impressed or interested in blank paper, on your walls.

The fundamentals of drawing consist of, perspective, proportion, colour, line and tone, and all of these are need to be learnt, there are many aids on the market to help and assist you with this and make the learning easier. There are aids you can make yourself, such as viewfinders, perspective guides, and the more experienced you become, the less aid you will need.

So relax and enjoy yourself, put your creative talents to good use, we all have them.  The ability to draw and paint will remain with you for your lifetime, a friend that you may call upon at any time, either to assist you in your work, impress your friends and colleagues, create individual gifts for your loved ones, cheer yourself up, distract you from your worries, and assist others to distract from theirs, put your talent to good use and it will never let you down.
